Originally from the theatrical revue Ziegfeld Follies of 1919, this song was sung as a gendered spectacular in the 1936 film, The Great Ziegfeld.
In this recording, American singer Hildegarde takes on a narrator role as well as a first person perspective as someone who likes 'a pretty girlie'.
Outside of the song and as discussed in her biography, her longterm relationship with her female manager 'intimate'.
