Am I Blue?

1929

LYRICS

Am I blue?
Am I blue?
Ain't these tears
In these eyes tellin' you?

Am I blue?
You'd be too,
If each plan, with your man,
Done fell through

Was a time
I was his only one
But now I’m
The sad and lonely one, Lordy

Was I gay?
Till today
Now he's gone and we're through
Am I blue?

SONG NOTES

This simple song uses the original chorus to tell a song of longing for a man that left the singer. The Smith Ballew/Ben Selvin version of this song from 1929 changes "man" to "gal", showing that contemporaries 'straightened' their versions.

This song is from a movie called On With The Show where it was sung by Ethel Waters in a scene set on a cotton plantation. The extra intro verse reveals that she is  in Birmingham, AL and her lover is in Chicago, IL.
