This is one of the more subtle oopsie gaysies in the collection, as just one word (‘beau’) makes the gender of the object of affection clear. In this and other recordings, the male singers describe their love as a ‘beau’, an old-fashioned term for ‘boyfriend.’

Available sheet music shows that the piece was original written as a duet in the musical Ah, Kay! for one man (Jimmy) and a woman (Kay). It shows a ‘straight’ line option for the character Jimmy; rather than singing, ‘I know, know, know what a beau, beau, beau should do, baby’ there is an option to sing, ‘You dear, dear, dear little dear, dear, dear come here, snappy.’ Luckily for queer listeners, this male vocal trio didn’t take it!
